It was World Environment Day on June 5th, and we have been thinking about environmentally friendly ways to take care of your drains. In this blog, we will share some hints and tips on the most sustainable ways to maintain your drainage systems!

Unblocking and Cleaning

When your drain is displaying signs of a blockage, like a bad smell or slow drainage, you might be tempted to reach for a strong chemical in order to shift it. However, excessive use of caustic ingredients can cause these chemicals to enter the local water table, which can be detrimental to flora and fauna. Instead, try pouring a full kettle of boiling water down the drain (this is particularly effective for grease blockages), or seek out a specially formulated enzymatic drain cleaner. These cleaners use bacterial cultures and concentrated enzymes to unblock your drains, and are much kinder to the environment.

Drainage Disposal

Disposing of unwanted liquids can be confusing, but you should never pour harsh chemicals or dissolvable compounds down the drain. Doing this can allow these materials to enter water supplies, pollute the environment, and harm wildlife. Leftover liquids like paint or oil should be poured into a sealable container, which should then be firmly closed and thrown away with household rubbish. It is also very important to dispose of unused or expired medications responsibly – please never flush or pour away these items, as they can be extremely detrimental to the environment.

Call the Professionals

The easiest way to avoid disasters – both for the environment and for your drainage system – is to call the experts! Our friendly engineers are well-equipped to unblock, survey and repair your drains, with minimal impact to the surrounding flora and fauna.
