What is a gully?
A gully is an open-top drain fitting, typically found outside a property. They channel surface water, rainwater and/or wastewater away from a property to the underground sewer lines.
Gully drains come in many shapes and sizes, and they play a crucial role in ensuring the whole system works well. But what exactly is a ‘gully’ drain and why is it important to maintain them, particularly at this time of year?
- The ‘open’ design collects waste, and channels it through to the main sewer system.
- The grate-like covering prevents debris from getting into the drain lines. This is a crucial part of a gully as, without this, things like leaves and litter can get into the system, causing blockages.
- The unusual shape (often referred to as a ‘swan-neck’), retains water within the pipe which helps prevent smells from escaping.
How to maintain a gully drain
There are a couple of key things to think about to make sure your gullies are flowing freely and working as they should:
- Remove all the debris (leaves, litter etc) that build up around your gully drain. This will ensure water can get into the system quickly and will help prevent leaks and floods.
- Remove the grate lid and, wearing a pair of rubber gloves, carefully remove any debris that’s fallen inside. Make sure you dispose of the waste responsibly.
- Make sure the grid over the top of the grate is intact, if its broken or missing then replace it.

- Check your gullies for debris, and make sure that they are clear
- Ask a professional draincare engineer for advice on winter-proofing your drains against freezing temperatures, such as installing pipe insulation
