January: Drains, Rain, and the Need to Maintain

On average, this is not only the coldest month in the UK, but it is also one of the wettest — the UK averages about 15 days of rain or snow every January! This means that your drains must cope with a huge influx of run-off and the organic debris that this can carry.

When it comes to the cold, freezing temperatures can cause problems too! A frozen blockage can lead to pipes backing up or rupturing, which is not something anyone wants to think about! So, make drain maintenance a priority this month to make sure you avoid a winter draincare disaster.

TWC Tips: Schedule Routine Drain Maintenance

Here at TWC Draincare, we are firm believers that prevention is better than a cure! Avoid a disastrous drain blockage by making sure you do regular maintenance.

Don’t get us wrong, our engineers are experts when it comes to drains, and we’re available for emergency drain unblocking (just see the big smile on our Charlie’s face when he cleared the whopper below!) but a bit of work throughout the year will prevent a big bit of work at the end!

Your January Draincare Tips

Check your external drains and guttering once a week and ensure that there are no leaves or other debris obstructing them. It’s important that rainwater can flow freely. This helps to avoid blockages within your pipes, as well as making your drains more efficient.

Insulate any external water pipes. In cold temperatures these can freeze and burst, causing your drains to overflow. If your drains do block, you’ll need some water to clear them!

Clear drain traps and gullys to remove debris – fat and grease can quickly build up and freeze.

If you’ve got a water treatment plant, get it serviced. Don’t wait until something goes wrong, as this can be very costly.

Get on top of any repairs, no matter how small. Think of your car windscreen…one tiny chip can quickly become a crack, and this is more likely to happen in cold weather. The same principle applies to drainage lines if they’re not looked after.
