The News in Brief
After United Utilities have been allegedly releasing raw sewage into canals in Manchester, seven justices in the UK’s highest court have given Manchester Ship Canal Company the right to sue. Environmental charities have been delighted by this news, as the legal precedent may enable other adjacent waterway owners to bring claims against utility companies for similar pollution.
What Does This Mean?
Raw sewage is dumped from the system when it begins to operate over capacity — and there are approximately 100 United Utilities outfalls along the canal in question. Manchester Ship Canal Company argued that United Utilities should have invested more in infrastructure to support their sewage systems, rather than relying on discharge into the waterways. This is a case that highlights the importance of water quality, environmental consciousness, and a sense of responsibility about what we introduce to our water table.

Whilst larger corporations are rightly being held to account, every concerned individual can make choices that help to protect both our drainage and our water. Avoid introducing harsh chemicals into your drainage system wherever possible and ensure that only human waste and toilet paper are flushed — many blockages are caused by the flushing of insoluble materials like wet wipes, kitchen waste, and grease. If every household took steps like this, our sewage infrastructure would have much less to cope with!
