Protect the environment and your drains on World Environment Day

World Environment Day 2025 is taking place on June 5th and is focusing on ending plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution has spread worldwide, contaminating our water, food, and bodies. Despite its seriousness, it is one of the most solvable environmental issues today, with several clear solutions available.

At TWC Draincare we are supporting World Environment Day by reminding you about the dangers of flushing plastic items down the toilet, leading to both environmental problems as well as damage to your drains. So, on World Environment Day and everyday, instead of flushing plastics, dispose of them properly in your bins or recycling bins, including such items as:

  • Wet wipes (including baby wipes)
  • Contact lenses
  • Sanitary products
  • Cotton swabs and pads
  • Plastic wrappers and bags
  • Any item that is not specifically designed to be flushed e.g. plastic toys

Why you should avoid flushing plastics?

Damage to your drains:
Plastics can clog drains and sewer pipes, causing blockages and flooding.

Environmental Pollution:
Plastics don’t biodegrade and can end up in waterways, harming wildlife and contributing to pollution.

Health Hazards:
Sewage spills due to blockages can pose health risks, and flushed plastics can end up in drinking water.

Instead of flushing plastics, follow these tips:

  • Check for recyclability: See if your plastic items can be recycled before discarding them.
  • Use a designated waste bin: Dispose of plastics in your bin or recycling bin, not the toilet.
  • Consider alternatives: Explore eco-friendly alternatives to plastic items, like reusable wipes or period products.
  • Educate yourself and others: Learn about the negative impacts of flushing plastics and share this information with your family and friends.

Think plastics may already be blocking your drains?

There are several symptoms of blocked drains to be aware of, including slow drainage, foul odours coming from your drains, and standing water around external drains. If you notice any of these issues, contact the TWC Draincare team immediately.

Our expert engineers can use the latest CCTV drainage technology to inspect your drains for blockages and damage. Contact the TWC Draincare team by calling 03333 052 243 or emailing help@twc-draincare.com
