How Do I Avoid Drain Blockages?
Keep external drains clear of leaves and other debris and avoid putting anything down your drains that isn’t water, human waste, or toilet paper. Most blockages are caused by a build-up of insoluble materials that have been flushed, like kitchen grease or so-called “flushable” wipes (see our earlier blog about these!).
Do I Have A Septic Tank?
Generally speaking, if you have one, you will know about it — they are typically disclosed when a property is sold, as part of the surveyor process, or featured in your property records. If you are unsure, or you suspect there may be a septic tank on your property, the easiest way to check is to read your water bill; if there is a charge for sewage listed, then you do not have a septic tank and are connected to the public water system.
How Do You Clear A Drain Blockage?
Depending on the specific situation, a CCTV drain survey might be required to assess the blockage, and then a draincare professional would typically use either drainage rods or high-pressure jet blasting to clear it.
“Is This Blockage My Responsibility?”
This varies, but if the blockage is on your property or only affecting your house, it is very likely that it is your responsibility to clear it. If the blockage is impacting a neighbouring property or is located outside your boundary lines, it may either be the responsibility of your neighbour or the local water authority. When in doubt, you can check with the local water authority.
What Are The Symptoms of A Blockage?
Slow-draining or glugging pipes, foul odours, water or waste backing up into the property, standing groundwater, and mould or mildew can all be symptoms of a blocked drain.
